Covid Driven Build
« on: September 24, 2020, 02:51:27 AM »
During the lock-down, I guess all of us looked for stuff to keep us occupied.   Getting some of my golf crap in order was one of my projects. Good thing home delivery, albeit a tad chaotic when lock down began, was available.

Getting some of my crap in here has allowed me to dispose of 2 golf bags and get less messy.  I still have one bag of shafts and heads etc in the store room and a cubby of stuff in another room.  From now on, I think I may be able to get on with just 3 bags.

I also got a club fitting set up on the side porch. Will post some pics when I fit the Titty CP-02s.

What projects did you get up to during lock-down?

SO promised pics of my home DIY fitting do.. its on my small side porch beside the pond (amazing how these guppies and "lonkang" (local term) fish can fark and reproduce.. bring on the mice...

My collapsible work bench with the swing weight scale, my Brampton epoxy, shaft beads in the tin etc..

Heat gun.... always need a heat gun especially for me with graphite shafts in irons.. I;ve seen so many DIY botched jobs on forums (here too) where wood heads start to bubble... almost certain those have been torched...

Measuring rule... super easy to make and quite essential...

And boxes full of other essentials.. ferrules, swing weight stuff, drill, sanding paper to turn down, shaft spinner, flo clamp, cutting tool, solvent, acetone etc...

There's no process flow as the equipment is kept each time and not laid out permanently.  Where it takes me maybe 1.5 hours to take apart and put back and get to the right weight etc a full set of irons at my friend's shop, it could take me double the time at home.  Good thing its a hobby thing and just for me to muck around.  My work however, if I say so myself, is very precise and how many fitters say they hand turn their ferrules huh... well, because they have the machine and don't friggin have to.

You think I will get the master title as I hand turn?  The butler to young English Manor Heathcliff Bates would have a field time... "Are you done Master Bates? Lunch is served."  ;D

So today was to remove 2 Crazy Target wedge shafts (essentially shimada K shafts..still my fave) from a couple of spare Grind Studio heads and to get them into the 58 and 50 Jade Adller DC-001 heads that arrived yesterday.

Also took apart an Epon AF155 passed on by Mau... the DT shaft plays a tad short but the non-conforming head is super light at 189 grams.  May have no choice but to go with a heavy tip weight.  My Sanki shaft will actually look great in this head for the ultimate old man "Lao Pan" combo.

Hey K,

I've been fitting my own clubs for more than 10 years now but it was due to the lock down that prompted me to get my own diy setup. I;ve also become a lot more handy with my car.  Changed out the rear hood struts today.

Don't think I'll get into oil change and stuff...

Oil changes on Pcars are pretty involved, I gather. My willingness to engage a project depends on the value of the item and my perception of the risk Iíll mess it up and/or run into massive trouble.  I did a bunch of work on my old X3 last winter (started with simply trying to replace the crankcase ventilation components and tuned into removing the intake manifold, fuel rail/injectors, etc and replacing every part of the cooling system, the oil filter housing gaskets, etc, etc).  I figured the car was worth little, I wasnít dependent upon it day to day, and it was meaningful to my confidence to get in there and give it a go.  Now, the car is ready for another 200k+ miles. ;)  Thank God for YouTube!  Other cars, I donít even want to take off the engine cover.

I am a car tinkerer and have done everything from elaborate sound system installs to transmission valve bodies and everything in between. I did mess up badly one time on a valve body because I lost a check ball and had to take it to a trans shop to fix.  I recently did the differentials and transmission on my SUV. Also like to do my own oil changes. I can buy the best oil and filters on the market and do it myself for the same price as taking it to a dealer or quick lube and getting bulk spec oil. Iíve never kept a vehicle long enough to actually have an engine failure but itís just something I like to do. Makes me feel like Iím taking care of something the best I can. Should probably try doing it with my own body lol.

Thatís awesome, M!  I wish I did more as a kid to gain confidence and know-how early.  My brother did, and heís not afraid to take anything apart. I love that.

Me too.  Outside of golf, I was never really a DIY guy until Covid even then, to a limited extent.  It is indeed a confidence thing.

As a kid I was more focussed on being to undo a bra with one hand ...
