I 'm currently tinkering with a combo set.  Over the last 3 years I've played several sets with alpha gel or similar inserts.   All have been good, but didn't totally survive for more than one year.   First was PRGR iD Nabla Black with alpha gel and foam,  then PRGR iD Forged with alpha gel, then Royal Collection 706V with TPU shock absorber.  Yamaha even made some alpha gel irons back in 2004 and 2005.

I had been eyeballing the 2006 Yamaha 410V with the S10C short irons for some time, and finally tried them.  But the long irons in the 2005 Yamaha V-MX alpha gel model are the ones that made the cut.   They will make you wonder if there has been any improvement in the last 14 years.   On the short irons, I'm going with the PRGR iD Forged.  I had these up for sale briefly, but hit so many good 9I and PW shots on my vacation trip, that I've decided to keep them.  The lofts link up well in these two sets with identical 32 degree 7 irons.  The 44 degree PW lets me add a club in between the 52 gap wedge, and I've got a 48 degree Baldo MB11 blade that plays great.   So that's the plan, at least for this month.
Baldo 911S
RC 306v Ti 3W & SFD Ti 5W
Yamaha V-MX 2005 4-7
PRGR iD Forged 8-PW
Baldo MB11 48
Yamaha 116 52
Yamaha 2011 56
Katsu Yamamoto 9706 Putter
