Battle of the Forged Oddballs: SUS316 vs 99.3% Pure Steel
« on: September 21, 2018, 01:42:28 PM »
So somehow I ended up with a couple of iron sets that are both oddballs with regard to material.
I have been playing forged irons almost exclusively for the past 10 years and typically, they have been S25C, S20C.

My main two sets that I built this year are Epon SUS316/Modus 125 S and Miura CB1008 99.3% Pure Iron/TT Monaco S
This weekend, I am going to play the Epon on Saturday and Miura on Sunday to find out which of the two feel better at impact.

I had my first range session yesterday with the Miuras and they felt really really soft.  I was quite surprised as the paired TT Monaco shafts are not particularly known for good feel.  The Epons on the other hand felt firmer off the face and perhaps the Modus 125 actually gives that firmer feel at impact.  Still relatively speaking very soft compared to other forged irons I have had in the past.

Grips are similar.  The Epons have the Iomic X 2.3 Matsuyama model which has firmness of 57 ( "Hard feel" in Iomic terms. )
The Miuras have Iomc IXx 2.3 which is a standard firmness of 52.

As for balls, I will use Bridgestone Tour B XS both days to eliminate other variables.

Will report back after the weekend!

Played the Epon's yesterday .... shot 82 ...  putter was dead cold nothing dropped.. nothing.
Today played on a different course using the Miuras,  shot 80 on a green that just got punched.  Too much sand on the green to make any putts.
Anyway,   feel on the irons....    Miuras felt a touch softer on flushed shots.    The difference of feel with Epons were like night and.... "later that night"
Just a touch stickier feel with the Miuras.   Epons felt just a hair denser.
I would play with either set all day long!!

Things usually get better as the night progresses...

Miuras I'm guessing are more demanding and better workability?

My focus was mainly on feel but I did notice:

- At address they look very similar except for the PW which Epon looks larger.
- SUS316 / Modus 125 launches higher.
- CB-1008 /Monaco combo flew straighter with less draw.

Forgiveness I would say are pretty much the same.
Workability goes to Epon "for now" since I know how much draw I can get out of the Modus combo depending on how I swing.
More time with the Miura/Monaco combo, I'm confident that I'd have better control of my swing input vs amount of draw.
Thus the workability I feel would eventually become similar.  Different shaft combo, different behavior.
BTW, I pretty much have no fade shots that I can confidently use on the course.
They occasionally appear unintentionally with driver or 3W but never with my irons.   Something I need to work on for next season.

Shaft wise, Modus 125 I feel are easier to control. Deliberate input result in the intended flight more or less.
Monacos feel a bit peakier from a workability perspective. Seems to require a more precise input.
Like steering on a Sport Sedan vs a Sports Car.

hmmmmmmmmmmm.. interesting findings , I  wudnt be surprised if  the monaccos had a lot to do with the feel differential.
I find miura are a dense soft  feel, I had my miuraisms  out last weekend they are so good , very diff feel( NS125s not good feeling shafts )  but the impact was so pure,  and epon are a marshmallowy light feel, miura tell you where miss the ball, epon just feel outrageous all over the face.
EPON fell different to all other ENDO  made clubs as well, closest ive git are the PRGR nabla id tours, they cud be an EPON  if u didn't know it was prgr .
epons  don't go far either, they SEEM TO BE  1/2 club less than my other sets, loft  similar of course!!!!!!

shape of miura , boxy rounded square I don't get on with either , hence why I changed to honmas  rounded  shape but  miura feel to me is the best. I like a slightly dense soft than an airy soft.

sayingthat my af-tours can be had ,

pryed from my cold..............................dead....................................hands................

Good review Nob.   Some how I was under the wrong impression that you had the 505.

The Epons are a 505/316 combo.   505 for 4 & 5 irons.   Rest are 316s.

The 505s in this mix feel a lot more springier.   Not clicky or anything but soft and springy. Probably due to the thin forged face it has.
316 and CB1008 feel much more dense in comparison.

In terms of forgiveness, 505s are in a different class.   It is almost as easy as hitting a hybrid.

The difference in feel of these two irons is probably unnoticeable to most.
It's room temp. mochi (Japanese rice cake) vs. mochi microwaved 10 seconds.  Miura being the softer (microwaved) of the two.
The subtle difference is there for sure when you hit em side by side.

I did notice while building the sets that the head weight tolerances were tighter with the Epons.
Exactly 7g apart using my scale at home.   Where as the Miuras were off by 1 or 2 grams for some of the heads.  Obviously not a big issue.
Another thing I noticed was that the Miuras had the hosel opening perfectly centered compared to the Epons.
You can tell by the even amount of ferrule overhang that sticks out from the outer diameter of the hosel.
This is likely the result of Miura's proprietary spin weld hosel technique where the hosels are pre-drilled independently from the head and welded on afterwards whereas Epon hosel drilling are done once the forging process is completed as a once piece head.   Again not a big deal as the ferrules are turned down anyway.
All very fascinating to me!!   How much of a nerd am I ?!  :)    Pretty soon I'm gonna start talking my yardages on the course like deChambeau!!   Go Physics!
