I was bored so I thought I'd get the thread ready! :)

I've done a test of relatively old JDM drivers before, see here: http://jdmclubhouse.com/index.php?topic=2933.0. Now is the turn of some slightly younger models.

Up for testing will be (hopefully) a jBEAM 435(2008?) vs Yonex Ezone Type-420(2011) vs PRGR Egg 1(2014) vs OnOff Type-S (2012).

I'll do some range testing for consistency, on course testing for obvious real world conditions and also on an GC2 LM for some numbers. Hopefully this'll be carried out over the couple of weeks(depending on shipping..) and edit this post accordingly if required.

Specs are these;

jBEAM 435 (10*, 0*FA) + Crazy CB50LS 7.7 (sx flex, 67g, 2.0 torque, mid-kick), 325g total weight and playing at 45", D2

OnOff Type-S (9*, -0.5*FA) + House of Forged Platinum (x flex, 67g, 3.0 torque, mid/high-kick), 313g total weight and playing at 45 1/2", D2.

Yonex Type-420 (10*, 0*FA) + Rexis M1 (x flex, 65g, 3.6 torque, mid-kick) 316g total weight and playing at 45 1/2", D3.

PRGR Egg1 (7.5*, 0*FA) + PRGR M46 (sx flex, 65g) 309g total weight and playing at 46", D2.5

Some of these measurements are best guesses until I take them all to a builder.

So this was meant to be a test of head manufactures with their stock shaft offerings.....and it still will be, but I struggled to find a Crazy/Crazy or jBEAM/jBEAM combo in the UK, so the jBEAM/Crazy combo was close enough. I kinda like the HoF shaft in the OnOff at the moment so it stays as my bench mark for the other 3 to beat. I may try and get a Honma TW727 with a Vizard shaft too.

My guess is that I'll like the weight and length of the 435, and like the feel and the shallower face of the OnOff for my bad shots, which are heal and toe, not crown and sole. Don't know what I think about the Egg1 yet, apart from liking the looks of it in pictures. Looking forward to see if I can handle 46"!! The Yonex just looks cool and really small.

Bring it on.

This will be great reading.  I've done something similar in that I've bought a T.388, an Onoff 358, a Grand Prix One Minute, and a Grandista RS-D (I actually bought two RS-D heads).  I don't nearly have enough time on the course with them to make any valuable performance insights.  They're also shafted differently so that makes it more difficult to make comparisons, as shaft choice can explain differences in feel and launch, as you know.  That said, I'm happy with all of them and would buy them again.

Your testing idea has made me think that it would be interesting to see some launch monitor numbers, if nothing else but to judge the shaft choices I made.

I picked up a Fourteen CT-214 about a month ago.  Working great for me.  Longer than 2 JBeams I was testing (450, BM535).  Just don't go with the silly-long stock shaft.

So far, I have 3 of 4. PRGR is still in the US...

Range session today. In order that I hit them, Yonex, OnOff and then JBEAM. 3 shots with each.

Yonex top
OnOff middle
jBEAM bottom

You seem to be more of a heel striker while Im more of a toe striker. Just a casual observation, not judging! Haha!!

You should really try harder to mishit the Onoff, just to try to get a true comparison  ;D

Finally have all 4 drivers. Quick range session didn't tell me a thing regarding distance as we have a little storm hitting us. Very very windy. Feel and sound is a tie between onoff and jbeam. Will update with LM numbers and on course testing soon. Feel and sound may change with my Srixon Soft Feel balls.

Had a range session earlier today to find which one has the most consistent strike.

Swinging much better today, even with the irons. Warmed up with a few AW and 7i, then a few with each driver. Rather than just smash away at their standard playing length, I thought it would be interesting to see if there was a difference on strike location if I gripped down the shaft to make them all play at 44" ish, and then grip back up a little at 44 1/2" ish. I measured from the butt end (excluding the cap) and put some tape on each grip.

Put some face tape on then 3 alternate strikes with each at each different length.

Here's the 44".

Here's the 44 1/2".

I then added approx 1 1/2" strip of lead tape (approx 5g) to the bottom of each driver whilst gripping down at 44" again. Unfortunately I didn't put the face tape on for these last 2 balls each. Jeezzz did I rip the 435 and OnOff. Absolutely bombed them, and the feel was also enhanced, to the point where these two are now the two best feeling drivers ever for me. And that's with range balls! The jBEAM I think was just a touch longer overall.

The title of the driver with the most consistent strike has to go with the OnOff. No matter what length I play it at it just suits my swing. A very close second is the jBEAM which is fantastic. Most people don't seem to like the jBEAM/Crazy sound and feel but I'm one of the few that really get on with them in this sense. The PRGR was just ok. A bit dull feeling off the face and the distance seemed short, even when I hit at it's playing length of 46". Had high hopes for this one but we'll se what happens on the course and LM. Last was the Yonex. Easily the most inconsistent driver of the four. Hit it all over the face and the driver range, and was as long as the PRGR. Got a little better with lead tape but nothing like my two favourites.

Will update over the next couple of weeks as and when I can get on a course. The LM might happen later this week all being well :)

The prgr can be resahfted to a sensible length NO PROBLEMS.
I have a tataki 70xs in mine and it launches just fine and goes very long, esp on harder grass. its a slight anti left  driver bec of the shaft. but don't discount it, its no slouch. I didn't like the 46 inch it came with stock although it was the ebst stock driver of the egg range.
shaft is ok..   but not awesome
its more for gusy seeking   or rather requiring  more distance.
u can re do this witrh confidence  itlll perform.
don't be afraid to put a good shaft in it,
im sure u will get a  nice surprise  fyg.

OK, so here are some number using a GC2 LM today.
Warmed up with irons then then fairways woods the a few with each driver, then started the test with the Yonex first, then PRGR, followed by the JBEAM and OnOff. Finished off with the JBEAM griping down the shaft and then an 8i.

Some interesting numbers. Certainly swinging better with 2 of the drivers.

On course testing tomorrow for the final top 4. Winner stays in the bag for about a week! 🤣🤣
