Thanks for all the help. If butt trimming still stiffens the shaft, then why do manufacturers recommend tipping when shortening a wood shaft to play in a 3 wood vs driver? Maybe I have it all wrong.

Dont take stiffen in the extreme sense for butt trimming.  An extreme example is a stick.  Shorten it by half for example, it will stiffen a lot.  Butt trim stiffens only slightly.  Tip trimming also in essence does stiffen the overall feel of the shaft per say but the active portion of the shaft that determines ball flight a lot.  So if you tip trim, expect the active part to be reduced, stiffen, given the sensation of being stiffer and will also low your ball flight. Generally it will stiffen but again, not to the extent of being lamp post stiff.

Got it, thanks!

What shaft(s) would you all suggest given the info I provided should the Noir not be of assistance?

Try the noir as is first.  I suspect for your ss, it'll be on the stiff side which crazy tends to play.  This Romaro is a higher launching head.  If with the noir the launch is too high, try the crazy black 7.4 if you want to stay with Crazy.

I'll try it out as is. Given I'm a relatively low ball hitter, I'm ok with high high combo.

Oh and stop responding and enjoy your round! Looks great!!!

Driver came in today and I took it to the range along with my Optiforce 440 with Rombax X type x flex shaft. I was all over the place with the Romaro and distance was not there either. While the shaft didn't feel particularly stiff to me given it's a 7.7, I can't help but wonder if that wasn't the reason I had the drop off in distance.

The Optiforce was the clear winner for me in feel and performance.

Callaway wins. Yay. I assume the Rombax is just a better fit for you. What are the playing lengths of both drivers?

Ian-500 - I should have clearer in that the Optiforce/Rombax combo was a better fit for me. Plays .5" shorter than the Romaro. Could pull the Rombax and install in the Romaro, but given MBBG's comment about the rolls and buldges on the face making it a bit inconsistent, I wonder if it's worth the try.

X flex at 105.... If that works then the 7. 7 is too soft and maybe a 8.2 works better.  If the shaft is too soft, you'll be all over the place as well.  That said, the head causes that too like how the M1 440 was for me.  The Romaro for me was a nice feeling and looking head.  Ok distance but very forgiving.  Always different strokes I guess.

wmclarenf1 - I get a hint of sarcasm in your post about the 8.2. I was sold the x flex and was told shortening it from the butt end would help reduce the stiffness and play between a S and X. Clearly that's not what it turned out to be and I may be better off playing a S as it would help me raise the ball flight as well as it's low to mid penetrating flight and while the carry is ok for where I play, my yardage is really exaggerated by the roll I get.

My thoughts on the tj46 wasn't that it's not stiff enough, but that it doesn't feel overly stiff. I think it's deceiving and due to it being so stiff, I'm not getting the most out of the head therefore causing the loss in distance if that makes sense.

Sorry to hear you arenít getting along with the combo. Could be a bad fit for your swing, could be youíre just grooved with that OF/Rombax combo.

The Noir is their most tip active version of each shaft, and I have only had fleeting success with tip active shafts. Seems I have to really ďsmoothĒ my swing or I have no idea where itís going.

Chances are a little tipping or butt shortening isnít going to magically make it work for you, unfortunately. And may hurt the resale value. But you never know...

Not sarcasm, surprise. Apart from flex, shaft profile ie kick point, tip and butt stiffness and torque also need to be factored as well and suited to how you load the shaft as well.

Ya it's a bummer. I was really hoping to like this driver. Reminded me a bit of the TEE CB3 driver I have in terms of feel (tinny). Oh well. There are some Yamaha RMX drivers on eBay that are pretty cheap that I'll maybe give a whirl.

My best stint ever with a driver was a TM R7 Limited TP with Rombax made for shaft in S tipped an inch playing to DEAL and 44". Feel (soft tin feel), accuracy, forgiveness was all there. Of course I sold it (twice) but should have it back in my possession shortly for a third stint. If I could find a JDM driver with similar feel and accuracy, I'd be all ears.
