Best way to increase swing weight for Epon 503
« on: January 02, 2018, 09:49:55 PM »
Wondered if anyone has suggestions that wouldn't alter the cg of each iron.

A friend is looking to replace the recoil 870 shafts with modus 120s for a set of 503s.  As the modus is heavier his concern is that swingweight would be too low (e.g. D0 vs D2 which is what he wants).  Any suggestions on how this is best accomplished with lead tape or weight in the hosel?

Thanks in advance!

Wait,   Modus is the heavier shaft... so it should result in heavier swing weight if built to the same length unless the Modus 120 is counterbalanced.    Also,  I believe the Recoil 870 is   .370 tip  and so you'd wanna find out if they bored out the hosel to fit the parallel shaft or shaved the tip of the shaft down.   Modus is taper tip.   Also having a few grams of tip weight to adjust the swing weight should not alter the cg that much.

One more option "if" the swing weight comes out lower than expected .....    Use lighter grips.

Thanks fellas, good info, he's actually putting in shorter shafts so I would imagine that would lower the swingweight as well.  I just suggested he send them to a professional with general guidance on the spec he wants and not stress.  I used to be real picky about spec and at my level it just doesn't make much difference.  He's a better player (coming from mizunos) so I understand his concern, it's frustrating and there are many people out there who just talk out of their ass...

For those interested, my buddy went with modus 120s, 37.5" 5i.  Set came out right around d2 with midsize grips...didn't have to do anything to it...why do some "professional" builders just talk out of their a$$?  I guess for the $$...sad...

Good result!
I have found that the Modus 120 swing weights quite high for a relatively light weight shaft, due to the balance point of the shaft being quite low, which is due to the tip design method of increasing shaft wall thickness to maintain stiffness even as the shaft diameter tapers down.
