hel/ no bud.. i played rugby in the US a while ago, had a cpl of X-college  NFL palyers on my team. one was a world league  NFL, defensive back. he went on to play rugby leage in  austrialia at the top level
he was prob the most amazinga athlete   id ever played with. i had to teach him not to tackle with hie head or hed break his neck, he kept trying to ram his head under the chin of the  attacking  team and knock them out!.
ther is   no  similarity to NFL and anything else.

we love it  here.

Funny our biases on sports. You couldn't pay me enough to watch an entire soccer match.

Way too many stoppages in the Gridiron to be fun to watch. A 60 minute game that actually takes anything up to 3 to 4 hours. Bonkers!!

I've often wondered why North America plays different sports to the rest of the world. Strange.

Used to play tennis on a high level in Germany when I was a teen. Got borred at one point and wanted to try something completely different. Went to the states for a year when I was in high school and got hooked on American Football. When I got back I looked for a team and started playing during my last couple of years of high school. Used to follow a lot and also. Absolutely loved it. But as Harry mentioned it took a toll on my body. Several ankle injuries lead me to give it up eventually. That is when I got into golf  ;D

Nerves will do that.  I'd expect those to settle as the season progresses.... or it will be a short season for him.

He did look better as the game progressed with the few touches he had.

Talking of violent sports, I grew up playing rugby in NZ back in the day when you could stand on each and ruck the  hell out of everybody with out metal springs! Bring on the World Cup this weekend..

Was negotiating a match for tomorrow and there was a lot of discussion around handicap and strokes and all that noise and it got me thinking about the topic...

For me, I love having a system to allow players of different levels to compete.  The only practical way to make it work is if everyone writes down and posts what they shoot...

As with any number model though it can be gamed and there are always hacks...

What are your thoughts on topics such as:

Can playing 1 course make your cap artificially low?

should drinkers who seem to play better sober have their number adjusted in money matches?

Is the course rating syste jacked?

IMO:

"Is the course rating system jacked?"
I don't think they're all perfect but....  we have a course that is rated easier than another one.  Guys in a group I play with (average
age 65ish) think the one rated easier is much more difficult because it has come carries off some of the tees that are pretty long.
If they don't hit their best drive they probably don't make it.  For me, this course is easier than the one rated harder....

"should drinkers who seem to play better sober have their number adjusted in money matches?"
No, they should just be made to drink!!  Other than that that would be a tough call.

"Can playing 1 course make your cap artificially low?"
In regards to playing a different course you're not familiar with I would say yes.  A lot easier to make that 10' putt when
you know which way it breaks...

As far as people posting their scores correctly... one can only hope.  Sadly I've watched guys shoot an 80 and post 86.
Sandbaggers suck and they will never go away.  Winning is more important than being honest.  I recently played in the
"Washington County Amateur"  and was beaten by 10 shots by a guy with a handicap the same as mine.  I shot my handi,
he shot 10 less.  Riiiiiiiiggght.  F-ing sandbagger.

That's just ridiculous!  I hate those f'ing sand baggers...iplaywith one....he shoots 80 every week on a tough track and somehow he's a 10 still...member at another club and appearently he's telling them he has bad days at our club...

I get accused of sandbagging every time I win...it's true that I often shoot 9 strokes worse on the back due to me thinks heavy alcohol consumption and rhoudy golf as the days I've stayed sober (about10 rounds this year). I win all the money....but, your score is your score I write me all down...how do you stay a 10 when you're shooting 80 every time on 2 courses with a 74/138 rating?

The other one I find amusing is the guy who shoots 88 and posts 82...why?  Just why?

There's a Guy who plays in our Friday Fiddle ... Plays off 14 and if he shoots his Handicap he's had a bad round..( he always does 5 or 6 better). That's until he plays the Medal every month.. Calmly shoots a 15/16 over every time!!
I've even seen him throw' over on the last few to do so!!

He's not bought the beer in Years...
It's just sad!
