Epon v Geotech
« on: June 12, 2014, 04:59:31 AM »
In the red corner;   Geotech RF 800 alpha spec, Speeder 661 (s), hot melt to reduce noise and increase head weight, plays approx 45 inches.
In the blue corner;  Epon AF-153, Roddio shingo spec 2010, plays approx 45.5 inches

Background information; After reading Stew's comments on the Shingo spec, I wanted one and luckily one appeared. This shaft comes out at approximately 276 cpm which is
X Stiff, I usually play at 265 cpm so it might be a handful, also it recommended to play at 46.5 inches which is too long for me. The Geotech head is light at 295 grams, it also
has a very shallow hosel so my Speeder shaft from the Epon came out at over 46 inches. Hot melt and one inch off did the trick.

At the range; Have not hit a ball for a few weeks and was not at my best, also the balls were the old ones for some reason so this is a provisional review.

Geotech; The hot melt worked as the sound is definitely muted. Knowing how the Speeder reacts went straight at it and hit some 20 balls, The ball just flies of the face, the carry is excellent but not wow that's amazing, the roll is though with excellent top spin, ball goes on forever. Same mid flight as Epon with same shaft. Not particularly forgiving with a loss of distance but again the top spin makes up the difference.

Epon; The Shingo is about 10 grams heavier than the Speeder plus its longer length required some adjustment, hit another 20 balls and for the life of me had no idea where they went, sounded good and felt good but could not follow the ball. Its only when, I looked up after a few more hits did I see where the ball was, I'm talking very high. The length was the same as the Geotech but with no run. It does not help that the driving range net was in the way. I think Stew said high boring bombs in his review, he is not incorrect. The Epon, is the more forgiving head and its Epon!

Unfortunately, I cannot play both clubs as my swing would go to pot. Not that one is bad but I feel that if I work on the Epon, the results will be more beneficial.

The Geotech is great and its price is crazy low compared to other JDM makes, Its a fun club. The only downside is its illegal.

I do not want to sell the Geotech, but if anyone wants to try it just pay for the postage and I will send it to you as long as you send it back.

Next challenge for the Epon is the Jbeam 535 with new Quadra shaft.

Hi Ray. What was the head weight of the Geotech after hotmelt? I may be interested in trying it out mate.

Nice review 100. How was the run of the 153 with the previous shaft?

Speeder produced a lower flight so run of was OK but not spectacular.

Think its low 200s, my fitter did say 205 grams but not sure as I leave it to him.

I agree the 153 is high very high but i like carry anyways and paired with a lower spinning shaft will give u some roll but not much. Forgivness is worth the trade off imho. My gamer

I have not hit the 153 but could the head be the reason for little run?  I read the 153 is a high launch higher spin head.

Its higher launch mid spin for maximum carry and forgivness.
Lower spin is the realm of the 1O2/3 series

Pervy was hitting his 153 real high but long and all carry, then last time we played he'd made an adjustment to his swing (deer antler spray?) and was blasting the thing. Hitting bombs that carried and rolled forever. His has a stinger in it but based on his ball flight I would say its low spin.

Of course he always hits the ball square and with impeccable tempo so he didn't spin it much anyways. I was really shocked and impressed the last time out.

Thank you for the flowers Matt but I was just on that day. Swing felt great, for a change.
Mine is a 9.5-Stinger 60s and it's been the best driver I've played. Just fits me well. Low spin combo for me.
I don't know why but I'm just waiting for the Stinger to snap at the hosel so I'll be trying out a couple different shafts with the back up 10.5 153 I have.
So far the 153-stinger is bliss. And no antler spray required just the PoleKatz babes bouncing on my little stinger 😈

On course review, Epon;

The Shingo shaft transforms the Epon from very good to excellent, only hit 3 drives but the distance gained was noticeable, two drives were the longest, I have hit on the holes by many yards. Lots more run than Speeder shaft and better balance. Very impressed. It's definitely X Stiff, but if you are Ok with S+, hunt one down, it's worth it.
