Titleist 714 AP2
« on: November 13, 2013, 06:32:13 PM »
Messed around with the new AP2 irons today. Wish I hadn't. Not even sure what it is about them but they just look perfect at address. Very confidence inspiring at address with a straight leading edge and minimal offset. Very small compact heads heel to toe but don't look intimidating as some blades do. Really well done by Titleist. Wish they'd made them all satin though.  Feel seems to be more solid and one piece than previous iterations.

The new AP2 might be the nicest since the line was introduced. But still Im not a fan of the dampened feel and the slightly overdone cosmetics. Id prefer the Mizuno MP-54 or Callaway Legacy Black if it wasn't for JDM.

Oh yeah... try the Ping S55 as well. Such a sweet iron, I bet 95% would tell you it feels like a forged club as well.

I have a set of the 714 AP2's - one round and a few range sessions and I'm all in - sold my Mizuno's which were in the bag for the last year and few months. Mine are shafted with a SS Pxi 6.0.

As MBBG stated these have a an awesome look at address, players profile. Impact is more muted than the Mizzies but the launch and performance were just as good if not better. What really differentiated these was how easy I could launch the 4 and 5 iron. Launch was super easy and had a perfect flight in those long irons that I've been searching for.  My Miz long irons launched too low and could never could hold a green.

The feel wasn't pure butter but its pretty close and performance is where it's at. I'll give them a go next season.

PS
I tried Scratch's On Offs with the Roddios and those felt pure - damn you J for planting that seed

Nice review MF. I've hit the AP2 several times now and they are very nice.

I got Johns other set of ONOFF and he built them with C Tapers for me. They look amazing can't wait to hit them.

Nice - those heads feel so pure. I'd like to hear how they are with those shafts.

The Roddios felt very nice - my only compliant is they remind me of:

I had a set of Onoff Forged 2013 with Recoil protos in them. They are butter. Definitely a "light soft" feel I call it. Marshmallow on a stick. I think the C Taper will help with fighting and firm up the feel just a tick.
