Title: How soft are Ping i210s?
Post by: nobwas on July 30, 2018, 01:49:43 AM
Been reading up on how Ping put some focus on softer feel in these i210 irons.
the last Ping irons Iíve tried were the s55.  While they were pretty good,  they were no where near Forged soft.    Just wondering if Ping has gotten their feel to the point where they are actually comparable to say Epon 302s or AF Tour CBs.   They did well with feel on the G400 driver so just wondering.  Anyone hit them?

Without having hit them, I don't think they will feel like a forged club would feel. They are cast after all. The elastomer might take away some of the harshness though.

i500 are forged. But even that I think is not entirely correct. i500 are made of 8620 "carbon steel" which in reality is apparently not really carbon steel, like 1020 (S20C) for example but a steel alloy. As far as I heard 8620 steel is cast then forged a couple of times as opposed to real forgings that starts from a steel block and then forged several times over.
I might be wrong though.

Well Iíll be honest Iím not sure it makes a blind bit of Difference, my AP3ís ainít Forged but feel softer than almost all my forged clubs...exception been the 2011 Kuro irons

You might be right. I don't even know anymore the last time I hit any non forged irons so I can't compare at all.

I hit the i200s and they had a very good feel off the face.

I just got to try both i210 and i500 as well as the Glide Forged wedges.
i210 were soft at impact for sure but lacked that dense feel that you get with forged.
i500 are 8620 forged body with a maraging steel face so it's similar to Epon 503 or 705 from a material combo perspective.  I was expecting a hybrid like feel and while
not as soft feeling as the i210s but really was not bad. Distance was longer on the i500 but I believe these are 2.5 deg stronger loft on the 7 irons compared to the i210s.
Then the Wedge...   Ugh... very firm feeling even for 8620 carbon steel.    Anser forged wedges were waaay better.    These new ones are perhaps worse feeling than Vokey US wedges.

As I said before, 8620 forged is not forged as we JDM enthusiasts understand. That might be the reason for the difference in feel.
As for the i500, they are probably very similar to the PRGR RS forged that I am playing. PRGR is also a forged body (albeit S25C and not 8620) with a maraging steel face. Only that the PRGR's hollow construction has some kind of polymer inside which I suppose contributes massively to the feel and sound.

I will admit that both irons were very very forgiving for their size.
I was hitting them pretty consistently with very tight dispersion ( on a GC2 simulator ) despite the demo shafts not being what I would normally use.
(DG S300 and KBS Tour 120 S)

Hit an i500 with DG s300 120 today and......I nearly threw up. How bad did that feel? Just no no NOOOOO. That's not how 'forged' irons should feel. Terrible.

Maybe, if you hit the centre of the club face the feel will be softer  ;D

Yes, the i200/i210 might feel better,  but the i500....I was really disappointed. Wanted to like them because I think they look great but no, not nice at all. Some of their older cast clubs (s56/s57) feel better/softer imo.
