Title: Epon 503, but what best to combo them with......?
Post by: ian-500 on July 23, 2018, 08:28:18 AM
Just bought a 4i to 6i. Now I assume that the 303 would be the best head to combo these with 7i to pw, but are there alternatives in the Epon line-up, new or old? Any one have a 503 combo set?

Unlike Srixon and older Bridgestone forged irons,  there doesn't seem be a flow of common design with Epon back faces. Each irons have unique looking back cavity design.   Ideally, if I was to put a combo together,  I'd want the back faces to be similar looking.   More importantly, my thought would be to choose the rest of the set where the distance gaps flow with the long irons.
if the long irons are significantly strong lofted and multi material like the 503, you may end up needing two 6 irons etc... which wouldn't be ideal.

From research, there's only a degree or two in loft difference between the 503 6i and the 303/Tour CB 7i, so it shouldn't be too difficult the adjust.

For what’s its worth ... the 502 and 302 where Apples and Oranges in comparison!!
I should think same could be said for the newer stuff!

Yea loft wise it may be 1 or 2 deg... but because of the different construction and material used, I suspect distance gaps will be greater.

Epons aren't combo sets...kinda like mixing your bahluga with peanut butter...I tried it, you can get your distence gaps sorted but it's the feel and ball fight difference that turned me off...RF551 sounds like what you're looking for...they have a beautiful smoke finish in the cavity, 5,6 are pocket, 7-P are solid...wish I still had mine...

Just received the 4i, 5i and 6i. Wow, I'm really surprised at their size. For some reason I was expecting them to be BIG, but compared to my Srixon Z745, every dimension on the 503 is smaller except for the sole width.
Getting this 6i shafted with an NS Pro 1150GH Tour x and I'll compare it to my Srixon/X100sl combo. I have some demo Mizuno 6i heads that I'll also use for a comparison.

This should be a good contest !

Ok........the 503/ns pro combo is.........short! The Z745 6i beats it on the course and on an indoor LM.
Course; 193yd to flag, 503 short and in the green side bunker, 745 on the green.
LM; 503 avg 159 carry for 175 total, 745 181 carry for 196 total. The 503 spin was 4843 and the 745 was 4047, low spin for a 6i, but that's just my crappy swing.
I was very surprised.

Very interesting.   So what's the launch angle difference between them?   Is the 503 going so high that you are losing distance?

I've been rotating thru Modus 120 S 120 X and 125 S between different clubs with very similar lofts and I found that the 125S ( currently in Epon SUS316 heads)  are giving me the most distance.    I'm thinking tip stiff profile help with lower spin which gets you a few more yards.  Well in your case 22 more yards.   :) !!

Oh BTW,    I found out that Epon, with the release of their new AF-Tour MBs have opened up combo options with AF-Tour CBs.
Is this the first time they are letting customers choose a combo option?   Not sure.

I'd to 4-7 as CBs and 8-PW in MBs

Maybe you got fakes Ian...those numbers don't make sense, I've moved 2 sets on locally to better players who wanted to try something more forgiving and the 503 was too crazy long for them...I'm trying to imagine a swing that would generate those numbers and I can't visualize it...please post video...
Title: Launch Monitor Test Idea
Post by: db2 on August 04, 2018, 04:19:51 PM
Your smash factor was much lower with the Epons.  Also, your side spin with the Epons was more than twice as high as the Srixon.  It seems to me that your swing was much worse with the Epon than the Srixon.  Or, the calibration of the launch monitor changed in between tests.

The next time you do this you should use impact tape so that you can better compare the misses of one club to the other.  After each shot, find the mark on the tape and put the number within the sequence in which it occurred; the first shot gets marked "1", the second shot "2", etc.  You'll be able to better understand the numbers relative to your misses on the face and can compare the toe/center/heel/thin/etc. shots of one club to the other.

Finally put the SUS316 in play on the course for the first time today.   Club Championship 1st day shot 77 (7 hdcp) = 70 Net
Going on to the 2nd day tomorrow against 15 other guys including a 20 hdcp who shot 85 today.  His net is 65!!  Geez.

Anyway,  I was using ProV1s today and boy the SUS316 is so soft at impact.  It's what I would consider as "Marshmallow soft"
I think it's one of the softest irons I've played.    Buchi VS200 comes close I think.    MP33 flushed will also have a similar feel.
My Miura 99.3% S-01 Wedges compliment the SUS316 from a feel perspective too.    Love it!!

Out of the blue, I started to look for some driving irons that could replace my 4 iron in the SUS316 set.

Looked for 23 deg Epon 903s both DI and Hyb versions.   Could not find one that I liked and
then I came across a head only pair of AF-505 in #4 &#5 irons.
Essentially copying what you are going for, Ian!    SUS316 are fabulous irons but forgiveness wise,  they are closer to AF-302.  4 iron in the set can be a bit intimidating.
I did not have intentions originally to replace the 5 iron but I think it might be fun to give it a go.
After reading what Harry had to say about the 505s I just could not pass it up.

I really like the look of the 503 at address, and I could hardly notice a 'click' when striking the ball, so I think these'll go well with the 316. Man you'll have a combo set that I would like to try. Nice one nob.

You should have asked me before you bought them though, as I'll probably be gaming the OnOff 2011 when they arrive so these (4i/5i/6i) will be up for sale.

:)   the 4i-6i 503s would be a good alternative to those struggling a bit with their long irons in a players set.  (i.e Me!! )

4i at 22deg is driving iron loft and probably as forgiving and long too.

The Mizuno MP Fli Hi 22deg DI that I use now is an excellent 4 iron replacement.   Looks good, performs well and feels pretty good for a maraging steel face iron.
however,  when the main irons soft like the SUS316s,  the feel just do not match.   My hope is that the 505 being all forged carbon steel would provide even better feel off the face.
