Title: New driver Quest
Post by: akapur on February 12, 2018, 08:54:01 AM
So i am in the market for a new driver. My SS is up from last year and i need something that suits my swing better.
My current gamer is the The 2017 M1440 9.5 degree head matched to a Tour Atmos Stiff Blue shaft. The settings on the head are for low spin and with the weight set for a draw.
Using the latest Trackman setup we found my SS to hover between 102 and 103MPH, launch with my M1 was 16.5 degrees and spin 3400. The total equated to 245 yards of carry with 250 total distance. The software shows that at that SS with optimizing conditions i should have hit that 15-20 yards further. The fitter felt the launch and spin were too high and that i was not hitting the ball in the center of the face. My strikes appeared closer to the heal and thus increased the spin.

We then tested the following heads
 M3 440 9 degree
M3 460 9 degree
M4 9 degree
Rogue Subzero 9 degree
Rogue 9 degree

After an exhausting testing session we found that the Rogue subzero with the heavy weight in the forward position brought the numbers closest to optimal
The numbers averaged to the following
Launch 14.5 degrees
Spin  2500
Carry 265
Total 280

The shaft i settled on with the Rogue is the T1100 Hzrdus 5.5 tippped .5 playing at 45 inches
i did order this and hope to get out with it in Florida next month.

Thanks for the report on your fitting.

Pretty amazing they can tune you in to a driver that gives you 30 yards more total distance!!

Congrats on your new Rogue SZ!

Nob
The trackman software has an optimizer function which shows based on certain paramters how effective you are. With my current driver the SS was good however the launch angle, spin and overall height of the ball was way off. This along with a heal strike was producing lower ball speeds. So the overall Smash factor was down.
By fine tuning the driver head and shaft combo, my SS was able to produce better numbers of which both Ball speed and Smash Factor increased. This is what really resulted in the distance gain.

Great report!  Very impressive how much difference a proper fitting can make.  Makes me want to set up a fitting session now.

Did you make your final decision strictly based on the combo that gave you the best numbers, or did feel/sound/flight/etc of the heads and shafts play roles in it too?  For you, what were the feel/sound differences between the TM heads and the Rouge heads?

Thanks for sharing!

Was out of state for a wedding and went to a nice golf shop Saturday for a while. Was hoping to hit the F8+ and new TM and Cally stuff. Unfortunately they were super swamped so I never got to hit anything just look around. Maybe one of these days.

Congrats on the new combo. I will admit that I am currently a Callaway fanboy when it comes to their jailbreak drivers.

The decision was based on which combo produced the max results. Feel was basically the same for all of them and sound has never been an issue for me. My goal was to squeeze out as much performance i can out of my swing. The first step to that was to find a driver that was consistent and long.

I didn't get along with the Epic driver of last year. The rogue just suits me better. I have always had a TM driver in the mix. This maybe the first year without Taylormade for me

Great outcome Ash.

Wish there was a fitter here with a trackman I can trust and enough shaft and head variety combo to test...

Nice Ash!  Congrats on new setup

I just ordered a rogue sub zero as well with tour ad iz 6.

It will be interesting to see if it will take the spot of my Epic/tour ad tp6..

I love going for fittings and love seeing the launch monitor numbers. My only gripe is that it usually takes place indoors. You can't beat looking at the ballflight. That's the only reason I've changed fitter.
Nice one Ash. I'm tempted to try an Epic SZ compared to my GBB, as I see know reason to spend the extra to go Rogue. I might even go backwards/sideways step and try an XR Pro/XR16 Pro.......

Nice work Ash...

I had 2 fittings last week..
Again the Rouge SZ gave me the Best Distance BUT I was all over the Shop with it!
Long story , short I went for the Co are F8+ with Project Even flo’

Lost a few yards... around 12 plus, but I’d be in play!

Trackman is fun and cool...great way to figure out what combos work...I find though that drivers I've purchased solely on the numbers don't always translate to on course performance.  Also annoying sounding drivers don't last no matter how good they go...that said I hit the Rogue last weekend and I'm ready for a trackman standoff between the 155/BasiAlpha and Rogue/everything...the Rogue I hit was squeaky long...well struck drives were so big I thought the club was non-conforming...

What is the difference between the Epic SZ and the Rogue SZ? Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought the there is much in it. Maybe a bit more forgiveness.

The rogue SZ is more forgiving and has lower spin.  The epic has a better sound.

Rogue is 7 yards longer

Thanks Ash. I’m super happy with Epic and will not be changing this year (let’s see if I will still be saying that once i hit all the 2018 offerings;). On the launch monitor it was giving me superior numbers to any other driver. But that doesn’t necessarily always translate to the course. On the course though, it seems to have another additional gear that no other driver has. At least for me.
