Title: Free's tournament bag...
Post by: freehb on January 01, 2018, 05:40:28 PM
...below has been my setup for most of this year.  Backup bag is nipping at its heels but when money is on the line I have a lot of confidence in this setup (distances are full swings, total yardage):

Driver:  Epon 153/Roddio M6 stiff, 10.5* playing 46".  245 yards
3W:  Spoon/Roddio F7 stiff, 15.3* playing 43&3/4".  220 yards
5W:  Cleek/Roddio F7 stiff, 18.7* playing 43&1/8".  205 yards
3U:  Roddio HybridUT/Roddio I7 stiff, 21* playing 42".  185 yards
5i-P:  Epon 705/Muziik Bangvoo Premium 90g stiff ss1x, playing 38&1/4" decreasing in 3/8" increments.  Standard loft/lie.  Yardage gaps: 170, 158, 145, 134, 125, 115, 105.
AW:  Epon/705/Muziik Bangvoo Premium 90g stiff, 49*.  92 yards
SW:  Epon 213/Muziik Bangvoo Premium 90g stiff, 53.5*.  85 yards
LW:  Epon 213/Muziik Bangvoo Premium 90g stiff, 60*.
Putter:  Scotty Camerone Kombi S.  34"  super stroke 5.0
Ball:  Titliest AVX

Most of the time I play about 5-7 yards off those numbers with a 3/4 swing.  I generally hit it about half a club more in an event but my normal swing is pretty weak.  I play with some big hitters and this set allows me to kinda keep up with them.  When I'm chipping or pitching with the big boys I know I have them.  The 49* 705 AW is a real weapon for me.  I love this club.  No chance of hitting the diastema shot with it.  60 yards and in this is generally my go to unless I need to put a lot of spin on the ball.  The bump and run to the 505/50, the 705AW does it all.  No problems with consistency, even on middled shots.  Spin is decent, automatic inside 6' with a decent lie.  If I'm short sided the 52 bent to 53.5 or 60 is the ticket.  I play the 60 back in my stance and can really put a lot of spin on the ball.  Out of the bunker (ours have a super generous amount of fluffy sand, the stuff the use at tpc sawgrass) the 53.5 with 13* of bounce is real good, so is the 60.  What can I say about this putter.  It kicked out the shin.  Everyone who's rolled it says "man, that's a good putter, lemme try that some more..."  Sets up so well, easy to align, feels good, forgiving...just makes putts...haven't ho'd putters since it went in 2 years ago...I look at these pretty putters for sale but no sense in it for me.  I don't see anything beating this out.  Putting was my weakness for 8 years.  Finally got to where I was passable with the belly, rule change, shit, then better, then this and putting is now my strength.  This old girl isn't going anywhere...

Good bag there, H. Like the idea of the matching AW. Found that the AW is one of the hardest clubs to get right. It's somewhat a specialty club that requires touch for delicate shots around the greens and less than full shots but also needs to be forgiving enough to work on full shots. I struggled a long time to find something that works.

Thx shac agree, I just got this based on how strong the lofts were bit glad I did, really performs.  I'm so short though that anything 100 and in is a feel shot so usually taking something off the AW or any other club I use...

Really like each component of this bag...it's very consistent for a good range of shots and perfect yardage gaps for me.

Long end,  irons and wedges, all great...very versatile with the wedges, hitting draws off the tee now which is hard to get used too...

You definitely improved your photographic skills :) congrats on that

Like your bag and all the fine tuning you put in. Iím currently working on a forgiving bag.

Will put in the AW of the iron set. Honestly speaking I never consider buying one before but your praise for the Epon AW got me thinkingÖ

I hadn't either...jacked up loft sets I'd use a 50* wedge...less jacked I'd go 52/58 and throw in an extra ute...when I first got it I was like "this thing is huge, wtf" took it out and strarted snuggling them up...been in ever since.  Have not been chipping with it of late as the greens have been lightning fast but forgot my 60 on #8 and it was a long walk back to cart so opened it up a bit wahla...inside 4 feet from a short side to pin on a hill...

Updated Bag!:

Same, no changeo!

No need to change and no desire to either.  Have a coup,e things in the works but I have a hard time seeing this set being replaced as my tournament bag...

So I've rethought my no change policy and I've decided to go up in weight class shaft wise...ordering a 70s alpha driver shaft.  The 60s is just to whippy.  Would like to replace the fwy and ute shafts with basi alpha and ut 70/80s respectively...will see if the BTi is the real deal, may go all basi, all through the bag...

In any case, hit the 5&6 irons splendidly today.  I'm hitting 5i 175 with a smooth 3/4 swing.  Really a pleasure to be playing irons again into the long par 3&4's...distence control seems better with the long irons than the mid irons in this set...only seem to hit the super hot ball with 7-9.

Looking back on this thread I realized he how far my game has come this year...705s back in the bag while 505 gets the bangvoo...may hard step the stiffs, am just killing the 705s...hit a flushed 8 from 148 into a slight breeze to an uphill green and flew it...wtf...hitting my driver 260+ rest of bag:

5i:180
6i:168
7i:156
8i:142
9i:131
PW:120
AW:110
53:100

I'm not quite at squirts level but I accomplished the goals I set out to accomplish and it's super fulfilling...can't help not bragging about it...the other goal was to have a better short ga,e and surpri

Bag in process...long end may get some new Roddio pieces but really happy with everything else, esp the 505s...missing link brash...don't see anything getting kicked out soon except the 2ball and replacing the roddios Utes with the r-sole plate.  Man, the Stella is such a good shaft for me...love it, Roddio is a different level.

Playing the 505s in the Sunday Nassau and the 705s in the events...I'm just so comfortable with the 705s, have a hard time leaving them in majors...am liking the 505 in the birdie game...have been striking them well and the look and feel real real good...Seamus is a good dog...he'd probably eat Hutchy and the fark...

New bag and headcovers...critics at Sjgcc completely panned one of my favorite setups of bag and headcovers ever...oh well...free just marches to the beat of his own little drummer boy and let's the world spin round of its own accord...

Quite the Halloween party at the club last night..,free went with a gift tag that read "To:  Women. From:  God"

FreeHB I have always admired you. Probably most because I feel like youíre basically an older, weaker version of myself.

To be clear, and no offense, not just physically weaker, but like vulnerable to marriage and emotions and shit. But I see a little of myself in your exploits because FreeHB isnít afraid to tell mama heís headed out, put on some funky duds, go out for a rip, head to the course, and give zero fucks.

New bag, new free...donít mean to toot my own horn but...okay...I will because hutchy asked...

Hitting the ball a lot farther these days...as in not just respectable but ďsneaky longĒ distances these days...I overpowered my home course today which wasnít in the realm of possibility for me before...unless I was playing from the biyatushuch tees...same or better accuracy accept off the tee so Iím looking at the roddio compact driver at 44.25Ē to ensure I stay at the 90% fairways off the tee level that Iíve been accustomed too these past 8 years...the changes I started on 2 years ago have really gelíd the past 6 months...basically change from a slide, reverse pivot over the top pull cut to a turn, right shoulder drop turn through smooth and golf is easier and more fun...due to heavy drinking and cold/wet/windy conditions, my hcap isnít in line with how Iím playing...gonna be a fun tournament season...have never felt better about my game....

Bag and approx ave distances-
155/BasiAlpha x 46,11.3  250
Baffy/Lunar6 43,16.7 225
HybridUT/Lunar7 41,21 200
505/Muziik bangvoo s 4-P 190-110
705/Muziik AW 49 105
213/Muziik 53/60 98-
EXO Odessey 45
TP5x

Some big changes, saw them pay off today...funnest wet cold round ever!  Have been pinching myself most rounds of late...wondering when the old free will show up...not squirts powerful but I hit a couple 270+ yard drives today and my decent, not great ones were 250...finally found the pace with the EXO today and buried quite a few today...unfortunately didnít get to finish but may go back out after tubby if mrs free doesnít seem to angry or mean...that woman scares me...

Iím sure Iíll switch back to the 705s at some point but ever since 505s were reshafted w the bangvoo-premium theyíve been going great...a little more controllable...light and tight is the way to go with these heads...hitting some dead straight lasers...good spin, nice strong mid trajectory for me w real good check...

Tough day today but made 3 birdies so might get some skin money...the compact roddio driver is really tempting me...will try to find a deal on a mid w Lunar6....

Quarterfinals of the club match play tomorrow....need to win this one to make it into the top 35 playing off for 8 cup spots...

Iíve always loved this event even though itís crazy...match play is the best format for my game...doesnít really matter...Iíll the the low cappers with strokes or the high cappers giving em...

Have made it to the semis 5 times before...never to a final...

Going back to the 705s...would actually prefer the 505 but the shafts are a bit too firm for my swing right now...the roddio baffy is a game changer for me...longer than my spoon, really straight and great out of the rough...,if I hit a real good drive and a good baffy Iím chipping on the 5s and that is like taking candy from a scratch baby when youíre giving me a stroke...that said, 2 years ago big daddy dropped a 16 foot eagle putt on me and went on to win 2&1 so Iím just gonna play my game...one shot at a time...

Love the EXO...getting very jammy with it ....just jamming it into the hole...

You guys need to get longer off the tee to put the pressure on from the start. It seems the older guys are very accomplished with their approach and short game. No way you'll beat them if you're a similar distance off the tee.

I really donít think distance off the tee is very important in match play...if u can make putts ur dangerous...about the same distance off the tee with this guy (grey vs blue)...should favor me being the longer hitter but dude made putts and I didnít...hit a similar number for greens...stuck a few in close too...but these old guys who play 6 times a week have real god short games and consistent ball striking..,

Thanks art, I am liking these...the shafts are really what have surprised me.  I prefer the feel over the bangvoo quite honestly...always surprised when I hit these...hard to believe theyíre a pocket cavity...I thought the shafts would be too light and whippy but they are not...very solid feeling...terrific sound..soft and deep...I have had minimal problems with distance control...

Canít criticize them at all at this point...I wanted a 59-60* wedge but they just donít have one and Iíve found I can still hit the lob just fine with the 56...man these wedges spin..still to be determined how much spin will fall after some wear but a nipped wedge just checks right up like it was hit by a tour player...

Really well for black finish...itís top notch...scratches bit definitely still black.

59/Lunar9 is in route...hope it gets here prior to the club championship...will take the 23.5 Ute out...just donít hit it much I like that PC 5i so much...I had 176 slightly uphill into a 5mph wind and just ripped a low trap draw right at the pin...finish 15 feet under the hole...I miss carrying a lob wedge...oddly not for the flop...the 56 is actually a great club to flop...I like tha low spinny lob wedge with hands in front of the ball that takes 2 hops and checks...the 56 runs out a bit...

Compact mid 11.5-44.25Ē with lunar 5+ is in route as well but wonít be here for a while...now I just need an nuff/labo/roddio putter...

Lol...Iíll do some good pics when I bring em ho,e from the cl7b and get em cleaned up...the 59* wedge is the one that comes with the cb set...itís part bullet part tear drop...just a thing of beauty...the milling on it is unreal...it spins like nothing Iíve had before...stopping power like the chikaras but softer and better out of the rough..,chunky and small...not like the 213s...not as forgiving but man are they controllable...I had a 33 yard pitch over a bunker with the green running away and the pin 8 yards from the lip...I hit an open faced spinner and left partner a 3&1/2í putt...on another hole I had a goofy lie, pin on a crown and running away sharply, about a 35 foot putt uphill but 10í of it through the fringe if I want to get close...basically an impossible putt to get distance right...I hit a little low spinner that hit into the hill, bounced to the top and then trundled down to 3í...

Iím loving the distance gapping these give me...
5-24 180-175
6-27 162-168
7-30 152-158
8-34* 140-146
9-38* 130-135
PW-42* 118-120
QW-46* 108-110
RW-51* 100
SW.-56*  92

I use the 59 out of the rough or anytime I need a lot of spin or super high shot..just digs the ball out..,itís so small and compact...really nice feeling wedges...

Went ahead and took my 23.5* hyute out of the bag...kind of a gap between 21.5* hyute and the 5i as I hit than hyute 195-205 comfortably but itís maybe 1 or 2 shots a round where I need that 185-190 club less than 1 where I need height but I enjoy ripping the 5i when needed...

Ian, thoughts on putters?  I wish roddio would have some mallets made...

So am loving the compact mid...250 middle of the fairway all day...I did miss one fairway but was a foot into the first cut...taught a couple big hitters a very important lesson today...never gamble with free when heís feeling sexy...just ask mrs free how it worked out for her....

Why don't you custom a mallet H?

Iím not really a super custom guy...the roddio is pretty custom for me...loft lie length and flex are he only things I tweek and I never do more than a degree or two...have a set of lunar 9 coming...I like to buy and then buy more to tweak what I bought into the ultimate...have leads on a labospec mallet with their high mod carbon shaft and a Scotty 6m coming...

Haha...Iímturning on those...have really been liking the light and tight approach but donít have but one set with 100g shafts left to horse around with...I know...what a travesty...my full swing has changed more in the last year probably than the previous 10...making for some confusing equipment decisions...good thing I enjoy the process of going from concept to setup...
