Title: More Epic... irons and hybrid - first impressions
Post by: JanKo on June 01, 2017, 01:59:08 PM
Hey guys,

had the chance to hit the rest of the Epic line yesterday, except the "normal" epic iron, which the Callaway rep only showed a cut-off sample.

--- Irons ---
After seeing the first pics on the internet I was pretty disappointed about the looks. After holding them in my hands, they donīt look to bad. Showing off quite some tech and they are a little busy.
I was expecting the regular Epic to be around "Big Bertha size" but they are actually closer to the Apex CF16. The Pro iron looks like a real players club, thinnish sole and beautiful at address.

After just seeing first pics I decided Iīm on the safe side and never would be interested in them. I wonīt describe them as a beautiful club, but the performance made them look better and better while hitting them.
Iīm taking the Apex CF16 as a reference, because I played them for quite some time now. Apex are really forgiving for their size and I hit them pretty long and high in comparison to most every other iron. My issues with the Apex were that they are hard to keep under the wind, they donīt feel the best, are a little chunky and I get some shots from time to time that are 10+ yards longer than usual. Nonetheless they are so stupid easy to play and long, that I sticked to them for quite a while now.
Each of these things seems to be much better with the Epic pro iron. I only hit them for about half an hour, but these are my first impressions:
- Really nice to look down at, thin topline, just enough offset
- They are as forgiving as the Apex and giving me the same distance
- Distance is more predictable, good to very good strikes were within 2-3 meters in length and mishits werenīt too far away
- Overall lower ballflight than the Apex CF16 and much easier to hit low
- Feel has much improved in comparison to the Apex, they feel way more solid. Not Epon AF-302 like but "powerful and solid"

Iīve never seen so much distance and forgiveness in such a small head!
Shaft in the Epic Pro was the stock Project X LZ 105 6.0

Will do more testing when we get our Fitting kit, but I do feel like I canīt resist...

--- Hybrid ---

This thing looks awesome shape wise. Just the right size at address, I would say on the smaller side compared to most hybrids. Sits between XR and Apex if you look at the Callaway Lineup. Offset is just perfect and the face is pretty deep with a square toe, a little "adamish". Carbon crown... make up your own mind.

What I find with most hybrid is they either are easy to play and fly much too high (like XR) or are easier to keep on a nice trajectory and arenīt forgiving enough (like APEX). Best compromise for me so far have been the Titelst 816, thatīs why they are in the bag at the moment.
The Epic hybrid does just this as well. Really easy to play off the tee + ground and it doesn'tīt balloon. Not a single bad thing I can say about this club, shape is perfect and performance is just what I want from a hybrid. These will be in the bag soon.

Call me a Callaway fanboy, but as I only have access to USDM / Europe equipment to test I must admit they are on top of the game for me right now. Epic does perform for me. PERIOD.

Seeing the first iron pic. It's the legacy black which looks best and which I would be most interested in ...

Me three.  I like the square toe shape of the hybrid.
Reminds me of my old trusty Adams A12 Pro.
