Title: Epon SUS316 review
Post by: 100100 on February 09, 2014, 11:57:34 AM
Weather in UK, diabolical but needs must and off to the driving range I went.

The SUS316's were made to the exact specs to my previous ONOFF's forged, apart from being slightly longer so a good comparison can be made.

They look great, the thin top line is perfect to my eye and they set up perfectly to the ball.

The ONOFF's were in my opinion one of the softest, forgiving irons out there, the Epon' are just as soft when you hit the button but off hits do not produce the super soft feel and where you could loose where you hit the ball with the ONOFF's the Epon's will let you know, I will not comment further as range balls are not the best to review with. Does the stainless steel bring anything to the game, I have no idea?

Dale, has the new True Temper 105 shafts installed in his and commented on how high the launch is, the specs for his shaft is high launch so I was not too concerned as Modus 3 are definitely not high launch, wrong, I have never hit balls so high with so much carry, the 6 iron was 9 iron height and so on throughout the set to the 3 iron which was almost 5/6 iron height. The carry was as long if not longer than the ONOFF's distance and this was into wind. I topped a couple of balls which produced my normal ball flight. If you preference is a low ball flight these are not the clubs for you. I loved them. Again, range balls, so not conclusive but a couple of real balls were amongst them and they were impressive hits.

Surprisingly, quite forgiving, you will loose distance but comparable to the ONOFF's.

After 200 balls there were no dings or marks so the un-plated version stood up well to its first range session. Unfortunately, the Grip Master wraps proved as sticky as ever and the deep cut in my thumb prevented any further action.

As most courses are closed due to flooding no on course reviews but hopefully more range sessions.

In conclusion, bloody expensive but on first impressions a potential winner.

You mean spin rate, if yes no figures as trakman equivalent was being upgraded with new software.

Been there, try a wrap or two of medical tape where your thumb splits.

Is it possible that the unplated head in combination with a head wind combined to create the higher launch conditions?

Do not think unplated head has any effect on launch angle, head wind maybe. If it would only stop raining here, I could play with them further.

Well I played today with the Epons and these babies are fantastic. ..as ive said these are a tad on the High side but have no loss of Distance at all.

All my fears have been set aside....the feel is Epon at its best...truly magic.(kinda had the personals stuck in my mind)

Also its worth a mention that after many range sessions and one full round the clubs show no signs of use...well nothing that rings any alarm bells.....

Is there an upcharge for the plated version for the Epon sus316?

you have it the other way around:) the plated is standard
and the non plated is slightly cheaper.

No real reason...I personally think the non plated are/where slightly softer...

Some might disagree. ..

Some might disagree. ..

no discernible difference.  we had a dozen guys demo and they could not tell the difference.
i even pretended that the plated was raw and vice versa no one could tell.

only way could is if you look at the soles. after a few demo sessions the sole of the unplated shows signs of
use. brush marks on sole.

If I hadn't not swung a club in over 4 months I'd be interested in these. I have like 12 clubs I've never even used on a course yet because of the winter. Maybe once spring actually comes and there is a hint of green in the grass I might start to try and find a set of these. Really unique.

i really like the shape having gamed CBs in transition while waiting for these i suddenly find the 4 iron of these tiny and sharp.
hope they work out for me:)

The recoils I had were built by BE and they were a train wreck. Felt great but once put into use they had some crazy behavior and ultimately the heads started flying off. So its kind of hard for me to say but I just always get along well with Aerotechs. And the MCI 120 were excellent as well.

I have a set (plated) 4-PW on order.  If these make the bag, they will truly have to be amazing.  I'll be coming from blades so I don't think playability will be an issue.  I'm just a bit worried as to their workabilty and amount of off-set.  Oh and this assumes they are as soft as people are saying as well.

Plan to test them with nippon SPB's but also have a set of dg tours on the side if need be.

I can't wait.

well guys i have several rounds under my belt
these are definitely not as soft as the 302s.
sorry to burst your marshmallows. i find this a good
thing though and reminds me of the Yams and even Kyoeis.

this is due to Stainless steel which as we know is harder than other steel.
sorry I'm  not technical enough to explain.

Ran into a buddy on the range today. I knew he picked up a set but he had been injured so I hadn't seen em yet . looked over a few stalls down and saw a bag of Epon head covers and was like whoa... Who else near me plays Epon. Then I realized it was him and his new 316.
I got to hit them. Pretty sweet Epon feeling.

Here are some more pics.

Hi guys
Hit my sus for the first time tonight and one word comes to mind. Wow!!  Ive been a 0 offset blade player forever and had no issues transitioning to these. I actually gained half a club in distance and the ball is flying a full club higher. Shafted with nippon spb's.

For the record this isnt my ride. I just happened to be in the back seat with my. 7i lol

Having hit my non-plated and Dale's plated, there definitely is a distinct difference between the feel of the 2 versions. The non-plated give a softer feel. One is not better than the other just different.

Yep ill agree with you...theres almost a clicky sound/feel to the plated...
And I hit both with same XP shafts.
Personally I think the non plated look much better and if the sun was out I can see the plated been a issue. ..

That makes sense. There's obviously a reason they made both renditions.  Had I bit on these I'd have opted for unplated.

couple of us are gaming these.

roll call what shafts you gaming them with?

 Spoon nspro modus 120s
coming from spb and the modus are just easier to elevate with the same effort and swing than the spb. have gained half a club as well.
have used covers most of the time but the odd lazy day without covers and hoping i can figure out how to satinize these.

gamed for several months now and i don't really see much difference in forgiveness vs the 302s. these are supposedly less offset thinner top line
etc etc but i don't see a difference. in fact the 302s feel softer than SS. these are a cross between yamaha and miura. soft and firm ;)
